Access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human right, yet there are still 2 billion people worldwide who do not have access to safe water for drinking, bathing, and household usage. This means that 33% of the world’s total population, or 1 in 3 people, do not have this basic necessity, according to recent statistics.
The Need For Clean Water
Clean and safe drinking water is crucial for many reasons. Water is essential for our body to function properly. It helps regulate body temperature, lubricates joints, and aids in digestion. Drinking clean water can improve overall health by reducing the risk of dehydration and boosting the immune system. In contrast to that, contaminated water can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and viruses that can cause diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. By having access to clean water, the risk of contracting these diseases is greatly reduced.
In addition to the health benefits, access to clean water can also have economic benefits, as it can increase productivity and decrease healthcare costs associated with water-borne illnesses. For example, when people have to spend less time and money on healthcare, they can focus on other productive activities such as education or entrepreneurship.
The Aim Of World Water Day
The United Nations recognises the importance of access to clean water and has designated March 22nd as World Water Day. A day to raise awareness and promote sustainable water practices. The aim of World Water Day is to accelerate the pace of change needed to address the water and sanitation crisis that is currently affecting millions of people worldwide. It is also an opportunity to highlight the need for clean water and sustainable management of water resources worldwide.
While it may feel like you don’t know how to help this cause, there are a number of things that you can do in your own life to contribute to this initiative. As a conscious global citizen, there are various ways you can contribute to World Water Day and accelerate change.
How You Can Contribute
Spread Awareness
The first step to creating change is creating awareness. Use your social media platforms to educate people about the importance of water conservation and the challenges that people without access to clean water face. Here at H2O | BWT, we will be running a photo competition throughout March to highlight the importance of World Water Day, and it is the perfect opportunity for you to get involved and contribute towards creating awareness.
Conserve Water
Conserving water is a significant step in preserving this precious resource. Simple measures like fixing leaky taps, taking shorter showers, and turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth can save thousands of litres of water. Avoid using excess water while cleaning, washing, and cooking. If you have a lawn, consider watering it at specific times or using drought-resistant grass. These small changes can have a significant impact in the long run.
Support Sustainable Products
Supporting sustainable products is another way to promote water conservation. H2O | BWT is committed to positively contributing towards accelerating change towards the water crisis with our extensive product range. Our water filters will purify and clean any source of water, making it safe to drink. We also have a wide range of reusable bottles, which are better for the environment. Our new BWT Climate bottle is environmentally friendly because it is reusable, which helps to eliminate plastic usage, and it also promotes water-saving practices.
Volunteer or Donate
Another way to make a difference in the water crisis is to donate to organisations such as A Spring of Hope, WaterAid, and FLOW – For Love of Water, which help to provide access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services to communities in need. The second way is to volunteer with organisations that work on water conservation and providing access to clean water. This can include activities such as building wells, repairing water supply systems, and educating people about water conservation.
The importance of access to clean water cannot be overstated. We can make a positive impact by taking simple steps towards addressing the water crisis, and we can show compassion and kindness to those who are suffering due to the lack of access to clean water. Whether it’s by spreading awareness, conserving water, supporting sustainable products, volunteering, or donating to organisations, every small action counts. Together, let’s strive to create a world where everyone has access to clean, safe water, and no one is left behind.
