The dangers lurking in bottled water
Most people reading this blog are no doubt fully aware of the benefits of drinking purified water straight from the tap. But if you’re not, read on and discover the damage you’re doing to the environment and yourself when you reach for a plastic bottle of water straight off your local retail outlet’s shelf.
Costing the environment…
It takes up to three litres of tap water to produce one litre of bottled water. At the retail cost of R6 for one 500ml bottle of water compared to 8c for 500ml of purified tap water, bottled water is more expensive than petrol.
In South Africa 1,2 trillion plastic bottles are produced per year, most of which litter our streets, beaches and oceans, damaging our marine life and leaving an unpleasant legacy for our children. In addition bottle production is rapidly depleting our natural resources as the material and energy required to produce the packaging and distribution of bottled water globally is in excess of 200 million barrels of oil a year.
Many manufacturers will try and claim their bottled water is a green product, but their claims to not stand up to scrutiny when one considers the negative environmental impact of these bottles.
Bottled water is also not as healthy as you may think. Only some bottled water comes from springs or groundwater sources. It turns out that approximately 25% of bottled water is sourced from … the tap. In addition, springs can also be contaminated. Recently Niagara Bottling recalled 14 brands of bottled spring water produced at two Pennsylvania manufacturing plants after the operator of one of its contracted springs failed to reveal evidence of E. coli bacteria at the spring source.
Bottled water companies increasingly use BPA-free plastic, but laced into plastic bottles are other chemicals that can seep out if bottles are exposed to heat or sit around for a long time. Some of these chemicals are possible endocrine disruptors. No one knows for sure what the health outcomes are. Do you really want your body to undergo that experiment?
Ban the bottles
At least 70 cities across the USA, Canada, UK and Australia have banned the use of bottled water. The World Wide Fund for Nature and Greenpeace also both advocate the use of tap water wherever good quality supplies exist – and if you can purify your tap water, you’re getting the very best water available.

H2O is the exclusive distributor in South Africa of the unique KDF ® Process Media, which guarantee the finest quality water and great taste by removing all the harmful, unwanted contaminants from your water. Most systems use carbon to remove chlorine, but need replacing every 3 to 6 months as bacteria will grow in carbon. But, the copper zinc in KDF produces zinc oxide, which inhibits bacteria growth and extends the life of the carbon up to 3 years. KDF water filter media are also used to replace silver-impregnated systems.
H2O International uses the finest quality coconut shell activated carbon, which works beautifully with the KDF to produce the superior quality, great tasting, purified water H2O has become famous for.
